Besides being a great month to have a birthday, August gives me blueberries and peaches and green beans - and so many other delicious goodies! As a child, I did not appreciate these foods like I do today. Maybe I am growing up!
My beans need to do some serious growing so I can get some canned up, too! We worked up our first little bach (4 jars) the other night. Many, many, many more to go if we're to make it through the winter without having to buy store bought!
I made soup from scratch last night. And I followed the recipe (almost) to a "T". I've just figured it out - I cannot follow any recipe exactly . But the only thing I did differently is to leave a spice out, which didn't affect the taste. My husband really likes split pea soup. I have been buying it occasionally in the can for him; but then I came across a easy-looking recipe, bought the dry peas, and waited until I had a ham bone leftover. I have never eaten this kind of soup, it was a first for me and my kids last night. And I loved it! Along with a loaf of yummy homemade oatmeal bread, I was quite satiated by supper. I'll post the recipe over on my recipe pages. And to round out the night, what could be better than watching the kids play Twister? Well, maybe giving them rides on Twister...
So here's one picture from my birthday that I *forgot* to put on that post last month. Surprise! I have had mixed feelings about this for some time. But after my first doctor's appointment this week, I am much more positive about this big change in our lives. We finally told our other 4 what was going on. Now they understand, maybe, a little bit more why Mom is always on the couch sleeping. And they are super excited. I don't think they remember what is was like 4 years ago when the youngest was born and made SO much noise... Of course, she still makes a lot of noise, just a different kind.
I love people watching. It can be so fun. So enlightening. So ... interesting. Do you ever make up stories about people you see? Or is this just a quirk of mine? My brain has to have something to think about while I drive! So each day I go to pick up The Boy from school, I pass all kinds of people. Today I saw the Postman who looks kind of like Hulk Hogan. Long blonde hair, mustache, buff arms. I think he is actually H.H. living here in our town, posing as a mailman to get away from the paparazzi. And then there's The Runner. This guy is either punching the air while he runs - shirtless most of the time- or rockin on his iTunes. Either way he usually looks like he's high on something. I wonder what he is training for. Today I saw a new intriguing sight. I passed by a man, running down the street with a Macy's bag in his arm. He was dressed in a white t-shirt, and tan Carhartt's; looked like he just gotten off work; he was running towards the work-truck, the kind with...
Beautiful! Your green beans are fab, girlfriend!
