It's Christmas Eve

After a day of preparing for Christmas - shopping, returning certain items, finding the right sizes, colors, shapes; making gifts and delivering goodies - I was able to sit down and relax after our traditional chili and rice supper.

And it was photo op time too. The kids were bathed and in their brand new jammies, so we had a little fun with it.

Getting 5 kids to cooperate was hard enough; getting a 20-month old to participate was near-impossible. So we tried some funny stuff.

It isn't as easy as it sounds to sit upside down on a couch.

But they managed to hold it for a few seconds. And then they turned the camera on us.

Of course my husband decided to goof around also.
The kids got to pick out one gift to open on this night, and then they were off to bed, a little late, and full of excitement for the next day!

I made soup from scratch last night. And I followed the recipe (almost) to a "T". I've just figured it out - I cannot follow any recipe exactly . But the only thing I did differently is to leave a spice out, which didn't affect the taste. My husband really likes split pea soup. I have been buying it occasionally in the can for him; but then I came across a easy-looking recipe, bought the dry peas, and waited until I had a ham bone leftover. I have never eaten this kind of soup, it was a first for me and my kids last night. And I loved it! Along with a loaf of yummy homemade oatmeal bread, I was quite satiated by supper. I'll post the recipe over on my recipe pages. And to round out the night, what could be better than watching the kids play Twister? Well, maybe giving them rides on Twister...

People Watching

I love people watching. It can be so fun. So enlightening. So ... interesting. Do you ever make up stories about people you see? Or is this just a quirk of mine? My brain has to have something to think about while I drive! So each day I go to pick up The Boy from school, I pass all kinds of people. Today I saw the Postman who looks kind of like Hulk Hogan. Long blonde hair, mustache, buff arms. I think he is actually H.H. living here in our town, posing as a mailman to get away from the paparazzi. And then there's The Runner. This guy is either punching the air while he runs - shirtless most of the time- or rockin on his iTunes. Either way he usually looks like he's high on something. I wonder what he is training for. Today I saw a new intriguing sight. I passed by a man, running down the street with a Macy's bag in his arm. He was dressed in a white t-shirt, and tan Carhartt's; looked like he just gotten off work; he was running towards the work-truck, the kind with

Swimming

We've jumped into swimming this summer - along with everything else going on around here! We've got swim lessons, swim league, swim meets. And so that means Saturday mornings will be spent at a pool. This past Saturday the two older kids had their first team swim meet. They did pretty well for their first ever attempt at racing in water. It was a good way for them to get used to the meet format, and find out what their basic times are. I'm used to track meets, and running events. Well, swim meets are kind of similar. And yet so different. I'll have to get used to the new terms and conditions. And if anyone has advice for a swimmer-girl's hair, feel free to offer it up! I'm almost ready to cut S.'s long hair shorter. These two yay-hoos sat poolside and watched the action.
