summer fun

School is out at our house. Occasionally the kids have to do a little book-work, especially when they are driving me crazy; but essentially they are done for the school year. So now we have time do fun things we wouldn't do usually. Like crafts and blowing things up and such.
Today was Rocket Day. We put together a 'rocket' from a kit I picked up last week. It was powered by vinegar and baking soda. We met some friends out at a park and set it up. After a few failed attempts - hey NASA fails more than they launch right? - we finally figured out we should set it on a flat surface, like an asphalt path, rather than on the bumpy field. And then we saw it shoot up to the sky. Well, almost to the sky, more like 10 feet above us. It was still exciting to see it actually go up. It almost filled my son's craving to "blow things up".
We also are making a book for this summer. But not a normal, story book. I saw an idea in the Family Fun magazine to make a book of summer activity wishes, and check them off as they are done. So we put together some construction paper and blank pages. Each kid gets their own page to list what they would like to do this summer. Mom and Dad are going to make lists also. A few of the ideas I have read already -- swimming, hiking, visiting a certain children's museum, the beach. Hopefully we will get a number of them checked off, and be able to put it all in the scrapbook at the end of the season.
And finally, crafts. My friend posted on her blog about a family of dolls she made. They look so neat, and I am sure the girls here would love to make our own family. So that's up next on the to-do list for me next week.

  1. for more rocket adventures talk to cousin Dave. OSU has summer academies about rockets also. be sure to watch the movie "October Sky" at least I think that is the name. Check with Dave.

  2. Yes! October Sky is a great movie - that's what gave S. the idea. He really wants to make one of those rockets:) I remember the boys doing this in 8th grade down at Sacred Heart. but can't remember what they used or how they did it. I'll have to ask them,
